Happy new (academic) year!

12 Sep

Yeah, yeah, yeah! We’re back, they’re back, you’re back, or maybe you’re arriving for the very first time – welcome! The new academic year is upon us and we can’t wait! We’ve got some exciting transfer news for you; we’re sorry to have released Tyler Keevil (who moved on deadline day to Real Madrid), but we can’t wait to introduce you to his replacements (they’re awesome!). Plus, we’re keeping our Canadian connection alive as we look forward to welcoming Master’s students who have graduated from Humber College in Toronto. Anyway, much more to come on that, but for now we’re excited to share the new program from the brilliant people in the Creative Writing Society!

Don’t miss this special, final open reading on Tue 9th

8 May

Open reading gold editionAll good things must come to an end, and so it is with Mathias’s splendid reign as open mic host. Mathias will be graduating this summer, and so Tuesday’s event – the Gold Edition Open Reading – which starts at Smokey Joe’s at 7pm, will be his final event as host. It will also be the Creative Writing Society’s final event of the 2016/2017 academic year. I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling pretty emotional. They say:

It’s time to celebrate the year that has passed,  and the future soon to be lived. It’s also time to say goodbye to some of the society members and society committee members who will go on to new adventures. As always, every kind of writing and performance is welcome. Mathias will host. There will be high-quality writing, speeches, gold, and fireworks.

All friends of the society are welcome.

Show, Don’t Tell – Launch party tonight!

14 Mar

Show don't tell 11The new issue of Show, Don’t Tell is hot off the press and ready to launch! Come break a bottle across the bow at Smokey Joe’s from 7pm tonight, Tuesday 14th March.

This new issue contains an interview with dramatic writing lecturer Senja Andrejevic-Bullock, tips for the Easter holidays, great flash fiction and poetry, plus the indispensable advice of agony aunt Martin Randall. They say:

It’s activity week, so you won’t have an early lecture tomorrow nor a late lecture today. Good times.

See you there!

Valentine’s Day open mic at the Frog!

14 Feb

What better way to spend Valentine’s than at the Creative Writing Society’s fantastic ‘Red Edition’ open mic night? OK, I can think of a few (a moonlit walk through Montmartre with Albert Camus, for instance), but the chances are that in our cynical postmodern age, this is as good as it will get.

It starts at 7pm in the Frog and Fiddle, tonight, Tuesday 14th February. And in addition to the readings, you will also be serenaded by two superb acoustic music acts: Arms & Hearts and Chloe Groves. So bring your best love poems, love stories, or romantic drama – or bring something completely different. Bring your loved one. Bring your secret crush. Bring a cute kitten.

Show, Don’t Tell – launch party!

27 Jan

Welcome back, everyone! We hope you had a brilliant festive break. Dry January is dead, yo, so what better way to celebrate returning to uni than joining Mathias and the team for the launch of another brilliant issue of our Creative Writing magazine? The launch will be on Tuesday 31st January, 7pm at Smokey Joe’s. They say:

Come along to the launch of our magazine Show Don’t Tell issue #10. First one with Mathias as solo editor. Lots of great contributions were made. In this issue you can read an interview with Miranda Walker, a brawl between the genres, and articles about the world wide web, writing spaces, and much much more. We will also reveal the winner of our sexiest author vote from Show Don’t Tell #9, and there might be a few speeches. As always Smokey Joe’s will provide plenty of delicious treats, food, drinks and milkshakes!

See you there!

The Creative Writing Society Game Show!

21 Nov

The UOG Creative Writing Society has come up with a brand new event: A game show night! Led by your host, Mathias, eight teams will battle for prizes and glory at the Frog and Fiddle this Tuesday. The contest will feature five great literary games:

URBAN DICTIONARY
JUST A MINUTE
ALPHABET SENTENCE
COMPLETE THE QUOTE
& PITCH

Each game will provide challenges for the contestants, and laughs for the audience. So come along to the Frog and Fiddle, at 7:30pm on Tuesday 22nd November:  enjoy a cold drink, and watch, or play, games designed for writers, by writers. This promises to be the best thing ever, or at least the best thing since Definitionary! Full event info is available here.

America, America, WTF America?

8 Nov

Students, remember: this is what happens when you don’t read books. Tonight, as the world’s most powerful country goes to the polls, join the Creative Writing Society for The Great American Quiz at Smokey Joe’s, and listen online to American-born Senior Lecturer Lania Knight’s thoughts on the impending catastrophe.

the-great-american-quiz

The country that has given us Mark Twain, Herbert Melville, Walt Whitman, F Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Kurt Vonnegut, Grace Paley, Ursula le Guin, Thomas Pynchon, David Foster Wallace, and Toni Morrison is also a country that has confined political debate, privatised education, and celebrated unfettered capitalism. Democracy has for a long time meant nothing more than a quadrennial choice between interchangeable neoliberals – and now they can’t even get that right. What’s most frightening about the US election, and what was most frightening about the Brexit election, is how fervently some people cling to their hatred. We send greetings and kind thoughts to our American students and to our alumni who have returned to the US. We’d suggest you flee back over here, but the standard of debate that surrounded the Brexit referendum is evidence that British society faces all the same problems.

Still, here’s a consolation: tonight, Tuesday 8th November, join the Creative Writing Society for The Great American Quiz. They say: “It’s a quiz. It’s American themed. It’s election night. It’s at Smokey Joe’s. Aka, it’ll be great and you should Be There™. Its £1 per player!”

And, as preparation, why not listen to Lania Knight’s election-based interview on BBC Radio Gloucestershire! Lania is on at 02:09:30.

Creative Writing Society open mic night – Orange edition

31 Oct

The good people at the Creative Writing Society have organised the second open mic night of the year, and it’s at Smokey Joe’s tomorrow (Tuesday 1st Nov) from 7pm.

It’s an orange night. Bowler hats, flute bands, the sash my father wore? No, no, no: the theme is autumnal, with the orangeness inspired by the seasonal foliage.

Bring writing for sharing and/or ears for listening. Anything and everything is welcome: poetry, paraphrasing, flash-fiction, extracts, drama, skits, etc. If you’re not up for reading then sit back and enjoy high levels of new writing.

All friends of the Creative Writing Society are welcome.

As always Smokey Joe’s will provide plenty of food and drinks to make sure no one runs out of fuel.

Last Creative Writers’ open mic night, this Tuesday

2 May

Don’t panic – it’s not the last one ever, but it will be the last one this academic year. Of course, for some people who are finishing their degrees before moving away, it may indeed be the last one, even though the tradition will last. That said, the last one was supposed to be the last one, so this one’s kind of like an encore. So I hope there are plenty of readers – let’s make it last! It starts at the Frog and Fiddle at 7:30pm on Tuesday May 3rd (don’t be the last to arrive) and lasts until late. Last thing, please see the FAQs below.

open reading my last seranade

Q: Is this seriously the last one?
A: For this year yes, but there will be more open readings next year.

Q: I haven’t been to any other open readings, can I still come?
A: Of course. If you haven’t been to any during the year this is your chance.

Q: Do I have to read?
A: No. Only if you want to. Open readings are just as much for the listeners as for the readers.

Q: Will there be another one word story?
A: There will be two.

Q: Can I bring my flatmates?
A: Yes. And you should.

Show, Don’t Tell Launch this Tuesday: An essential pre-Easter party!

4 Mar

8 CoverDon’t miss the last magazine launch of the year, with free copies of the magazine and student deals on food and drinks. It’s at Smokey Joe’s this Tuesday, and it’s going to be awesome, and it’s extra special because it’s the last magazine produced by Charl & Ash.

Charl and Ash have done amazing things with Show, Don’t Tell, and this is a chance to thank them for all their work while toasting the future of the magazine.

The evening will also feature a fun book swap. To take part, simply wrap up a book, write some keywords about it and bring it to the launch! You’ll get a ticket you can use to swap it for another book.

They’ll also be introducing the new editor of Show Don’t Tell and there will be some fun wordy games. It starts at 7:30, at Smokey Joe’s on 16 Bennington Street, on Tuesday 8th March.

The big welcome back social!

25 Jan

So Christmas is over, 2016 is no longer a novelty, and it finally got cold. Family arguments are suspended, to be resumed in eleven months, by which time you’ll once again have forgotten why Uncle Steve and Auntie Julie can’t be polite beyond the second sherry. Assessments have been submitted, decorations have been stowed in lofts. We’ve had a fortnight of enhanced learning and the sinister-sounding “brand you week”. Finally, semester two begins today! So, tomorrow, what better way to celebrate than with welcome back drinks at the Frog and Fiddle? Be there, Tuesday 26th January, at 7:30pm – all Creative Writers and their friends are welcome and expected.
