RE: Generate showcase, June 8th

3 Jun

Never mind the ballots, don’t miss this! Our final event of the 2016/2017 academic year will feature readings and discussion with poet Lesley Ingram, short story writer Daisy Johnson, and novelist Sarah Walton. They’ll be speaking at our afternoon panel at 3pm in FCH TC002.

Then, in the evening, those authors will read from their work alongside UoG students at the Frog & Fiddle, from 7pm. Both events are free and open to the public. See you there!

Last Creative Writers’ open mic night, this Tuesday

2 May

Don’t panic – it’s not the last one ever, but it will be the last one this academic year. Of course, for some people who are finishing their degrees before moving away, it may indeed be the last one, even though the tradition will last. That said, the last one was supposed to be the last one, so this one’s kind of like an encore. So I hope there are plenty of readers – let’s make it last! It starts at the Frog and Fiddle at 7:30pm on Tuesday May 3rd (don’t be the last to arrive) and lasts until late. Last thing, please see the FAQs below.

open reading my last seranade

Q: Is this seriously the last one?
A: For this year yes, but there will be more open readings next year.

Q: I haven’t been to any other open readings, can I still come?
A: Of course. If you haven’t been to any during the year this is your chance.

Q: Do I have to read?
A: No. Only if you want to. Open readings are just as much for the listeners as for the readers.

Q: Will there be another one word story?
A: There will be two.

Q: Can I bring my flatmates?
A: Yes. And you should.

The big welcome back social!

25 Jan

So Christmas is over, 2016 is no longer a novelty, and it finally got cold. Family arguments are suspended, to be resumed in eleven months, by which time you’ll once again have forgotten why Uncle Steve and Auntie Julie can’t be polite beyond the second sherry. Assessments have been submitted, decorations have been stowed in lofts. We’ve had a fortnight of enhanced learning and the sinister-sounding “brand you week”. Finally, semester two begins today! So, tomorrow, what better way to celebrate than with welcome back drinks at the Frog and Fiddle? Be there, Tuesday 26th January, at 7:30pm – all Creative Writers and their friends are welcome and expected.

This Tuesday, we’re set for the second open mic of the academic year, so brace yourself for the usual combination of poetry, prose, drama, and drinking. Welcome back, returning students, and a special welcome to all our new students. What would the new term be with no new term social? Boring! The good people at the University of Gloucestershire Creative Writing Society have saved us from such a fate – the first social of the new academic year will be this Tuesday, the 23rd of September. It will start at 8:30pm at the Frog and Fiddle pub – and finish who knows where? – and will be a purely social gathering. It’s a great chance for returning students to catch up and for new students to meet  more of the gang. Undergraduates and postgraduates are equally welcome – just bring a sense of fun and maybe some beer money. See you there!

Do you ever get spam from weird speciality dating sites? For some reason I’m particularly targeted by adverts promising me the chance to date men in uniform. Well, this Monday, the open mic series at the University of Gloucestershire offers you a Valentine’s event specifically for Creative Writers.

Don’t panic: it’s nothing as awkward as speed dating. No, it’s the chance to read your romantic and anti-romantic prose, poems, and plays to a sizzling hot audience. Whether it’s sweet, sexy, pornographic , platonic, soppy, sad, or filled with bitter recriminations, bring something that defines your notion of Valentine’s Day.

The dress code is ‘red and sexy’, and the event is at the Frog and Fiddle, 8:15pm on Monday 10th February. See here for more information

There’s an open mic this Tuesday (19th November), and the theme – brace yourself – is fantasy. It’s being hosted by Alice Rowan, and fancy dress is ‘welcome but not compulsory’. If you do fancy getting orced up, there’s a free drink for best dressed attendee. So bring your banshees, make-up as a mermaid, go goblin, come as a Kobold, or dress sensibly and provide a Randallesque critique of the whole occasion. Bring your poetry, prose, and plays to the Frog and Fiddle, at 7:30 for an 8pm start.

Open Mic this Wednesday

22 Sep

Frog logoLeaves yellowing, knitted scarves appearing, red-kneed children excitedly scrabbling for conkers… Yes, summer is ending and the good news is that open mics are back! This Tuesday, we’re set for the usual combination of poetry, prose, drama, and drinking. Whether you’ve been to many open readings or are new to the whole idea, come along on Wednesday for an informal and relaxed literary evening. You’re encouraged to read some of your work (readings should last no longer than five minutes), but you’re equally welcome just to listen, drink, meet new and familiar faces, or hang around in the smoking area trying to look bohemian. Where is it? In ‘the barn’ at the Frog and Fiddle pub on Cheltenham High Street. When is it? Wednesday 25th September from 7:30pm. In addition to all the usual capers, there will also be an option for anyone interested to try out for the University of Gloucestershire poetry slam team. See you there!

Christmas Open Mic Night: Tuesday 4th December

30 Nov

The final open mic of the year is on this Tuesday at the Frog and Fiddle Pub. The night’s being co-hosted by Adam Magee and Becca Edwards, and it’s Christmas themed. They say:

Christmas fancy dressThe theme this time is a Christmassy one (sort of), and we want you to try to bring stories that aren’t just happy, but also ones showing the other side of Christmas that people experience (which should make Randall happy). But dress Christmassy – hats, etc. – because we can’t make Randall too happy.

Gather at 7:30 for an 8pm kick off. Be present or be a Scrooge. (Or be present and be a Scrooge.)

Open Mic this Tuesday

17 Nov

The penultimate open mic night of the year will be held on Tuesday 20th November. Bookies are predicting it will be a slightly quieter night than the final, Christmas-themed bash, so if you want to read but don’t want to read in front of too many people, now’s yer chance. Meet at 7:30, for an 8pm kick off, at the Frog and Fiddle.
